Singapore Holly (Malpighia Coccigera)
The Malpighia Coccigera, more commonly known as the Singapore Holly is a gorgeous bonsai great for beginners. While not being a true holly its small dark green leaves with small spines look remarklably similar to holly. Except, this one gives you gorgeous light pink flowers as well as edible cherries for most of the year! Native to the Caribbean this tropical evergreen shrub grows to between 2-3' tall with a 2-4' horizontal spread. Be sure to protect this beauty from the frost!
The Singapore Holly is great for beginners, be sure the soil does not completely dry out as this tree can react quite harshly to extended droughts. Very hardy species that can survive in a variety of conditions, it does best in full sun or filtered light.
